Abstract

When appraising Soprom Mgaloblishvili’s literary contributions, his commendable role as a memoirist stands out prominently. He commenced writing and disseminating memoirs during the 1900s. In 1910, the initial five chapters of his memoirs found publication in the ‘Eri’ magazine, with subsequent installments appearing in the ‘Temi’ newspaper. Following Soprom Mgaloblishvili’s demise, literary scholar Levan Asatiani diligently assembled and published nearly all of the author’s memoirs in a single volume.   Soprom Mgaloblishvili crafted remarkable memoirs depicting Georgian writers and public figures. His intimate familiarity and both personal and professional connections with most of these individuals uniquely positioned him to share insights that remain unparalleled among other memoirists. Notably, his recollections of Akaki Tsereteli are particularly noteworthy. He dedicated two memories to the poet: ‘Akaki Is With Us’ and ‘Akaki’, both of which were published in the ‘Theatre and Life’ magazine (N5, N7) around the time of the poet’s passing. The memoirist especially mentions Akaki’s quality as a genuine poet, highlighting his love of travel and his desire to be close to people. He compares the nature of Ilia and Akaki, noting that Akaki’s extensive travels contribute to his deep understanding of people. In contrast, Ilia remains more confined to his study, known personally only to the city’s nobility. Soprom Mgaloblishvili’s two memoirs, ‘Akaki Is With Us’ and ‘Akaki’ were composed with profound affection and reverence for Akaki Tsereteli. Within these memoirs, a captivating portrayal of the poet emerges, continuing to intrigue readers to this day.
