Abstract

During the period of the Democratic Republic of Georgia, the most powerful countries in the world played a significant role in the life of Batumi. This interest was primarily driven by the city’s military, political, and economic importance. This is evident in the fact that a considerable portion of the publications in the ‘New York Times’ about Georgia, published in 1918-1921, are dedicated to Batumi. In addition to these articles, I have paid attention to one of the most crucial documents, the memoirs of the 31st President of the United States from 1929 to 1933, Herbert Hoover. Serving as the Head of the American Relief Administration from 1919 to 1923, he was directly involved with the Transcaucasian Region and, consequently, Georgia. In Herbert Hoover’s memoirs and in publications from the ‘New York Times,’ the emphasis on Batumi revolves around its significant commercial and economic potential. All other aspects are explored within this context. Despite some mistakes and a lack of objectivity in certain documents, we should consider them as valuable research materials for assessing the international community’s perception of the historical events that unfolded in Batumi during 19181921.
