Abstract

Tamar Gogolashvili-Papava is one of the prominent representatives of the 20th-century Georgian emigration with a diverse legacy, in which the relevant and important issues of the era are well reflected. The problem of women›s emancipation should also be singled out among them. It is known that the issue of women›s emancipation became particularly acute in the second half of the 19th century both in America and Europe, and this movement had a resonance in Georgia. Women›s struggle for their rights was quite a complex and contradictory process. It was prompted not solely by the conservatism of patriarchal society but was also entangled with various other social issues. In 1909-1910, Tamar Papava addressed these issues through a series of articles in newspapers published in Georgia (‘Momavali’ (Future), ‘Akhali Skhivi’ (New Ray)). In addition to being informative and often educational in nature, these articles also reflected the situation in Georgia, which was quite difficult in this regard. When writing about these issues, Tamar Papava gave an overview of the situation in Europe, America, Finland, Norway, and Russia, and analyzed the active struggle of women for their rights, which was caused by changes in the political and economic spheres. She did not share the opinion that women were naturally characterized by weakness and inactivity, which placed them on a relatively low social level compared to men. She emphasized the class aspects in the women›s movement, their involvement in politics and so on. Tamar Papava›s correspondence clearly highlights the seriousness of the problem itself, the attitude of a traditional society towards the status of women, and the struggle of women to change the existing reality. Despite the descriptive nature of these articles, the accents in them still clearly reveal the author›s irreconcilability with the difficult social status of women.
