Political Discourse Analysis through Pragmatic Markers and the Functions of Passive Voice (Applied in English Inaugural Speeches)

Discourse serves as a means of communication, and its analysis involves not only the structural aspects of language but also the impact of pragmatic markers on the social and cultural context. It allows for the examination of strategies that contribute to reinforcing power dynamics and shaping ideologies. This article focuses on the analysis of political debates, particularly presidential inaugural addresses, from a pragmatic perspective, investigating how the strategic use of language can construct political narratives. Pragmatic markers (deictic, logical, adversarial, illocutionary, etc.) play a pivotal role in shaping political discourse, as they affect how messages are conveyed and received by an audience. In addition, special emphasis is placed on the strategic use of the “active” and “passive” voice in the content of political statements (based on the inaugural speeches of Donald Trump and Joe Biden) and how these choices impact the political message conveyed.
