The proposed scholarly publication explores the complex political and family relations between the Principalities of Samegrelo and Abkhazia, with particular attention focused on Mikheil Sharvashidze, the Head of the Principality of Abkhazia and son of George Sharvashidze. In spite of the fact that both principalities fought for the Samurzakano territory, Prince Mikheil’s actions in the 1830s, including the annexation of Ilori and his subsequent marriage with a member of the Principality of Mingrelia, reflected both his private and political ambitions. Though these actions strained relations with the Samegrelo principality. The difficult dynamics between the two principalities were further aggravated by the Russian Empire’s interventions and decisions, especially during the Crimean War. The study emphasizes diverse relationships, individual choices, regional politics, and broad imperial strategies in the Caucasus during the 19th century.
