Abstract

According to the monuments of the old Georgian language, infinitive and participial forms have the ability to create verb syntagms. Such constructions indicate an early stage of language development, specifically a period when deverbal units (participial forms) were linked to actants in the same way as the corresponding verb forms. From the perspective of historical grammar, it is interesting to analyze the syntagma created by participial forms. Samples of the old Georgian language reveal that the participle creates a specific syntagma, namely, the one expected in the case of a verbal syntagma. Based on the material from the 12th-century Gelatian manuscript (K14), the article discusses such linguistic facts in which participial forms compose the construction of the verb phrase, and the noun is arranged in the same case as expected with the corresponding verb. In such syntagms, a simple complement in the genitive case is not linked to the participial forms. Instead, an actant in the dative case is connected to them, thereby creating a verb syntagm.
