Syncretism of the Instrumental and Inessive in a Single Form in Ancient Greek and Classical Syriac and Their Functional Overlap in Georgian: A Typological-Comparative Analysis

Abstract

This article examines one issue in typological studies of syncretism, namely the functional overlap of the instrumental and the inessive within a single morphological unit. The study is based on typological and morphosemantic analysis and data provided from Georgian, Ancient Greek, and Classical Syriac. It demonstrates that Syriac -ܒ [be] and Greek ἐν [en] syncretically combine instrumental and inessive functions within a single formal element, whereas in Georgian these functions are formally differentiated by the postposition -ში (-ši) and the instrumental case; nevertheless, in certain contexts semantic interchangeability between them can still be observed. The comparative analysis of the data from the languages under consideration reveals the typological regularity of the functional overlap between the instrumental and inessive, which is systematically realized in languages with different structural types (Georgian, Ancient Greek, and Classical Syriac).
